Sen. Alan Cranston has filed for divorce to end his 10-year marriage to his wife, Norma, his lawyer said.

Cranston, 73, cited “irreconcilable differences” in the petition filed Tuesday in Superior Court by former Los Angeles Bar Assn. President Patricia Phillips.

The Democratic senator from California could not be reached immediately for comment, but his aide Kam Kuwata acknowledged that Cranston has begun divorce proceedings.

The Cranstons married May 19, 1978. They have no children. Norma Cranston will be seeking spousal support from her husband and a division of his assets, which were not disclosed in the petition, Phillips said.

“I don’t think it’s unfriendly at all,” Phillips said of the divorce. “As far as I know they are still living together.”

Cranston, the assistant Senate Democratic leader, is one of the more liberal members of Congress. He was first elected to the Senate in 1968 after serving as state controller for 18 years. He ran unsuccessfully for President in 1984.
