Vice President George Bush spent a half-hour today with Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte, who is hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center with stomach and liver cancer.

Bush “wished Duarte well and expressed his gratitude for what Duarte’s done for democracy,” a spokeswoman for the vice president, Kristin Taylor, said.

Bush arrived at Andrews Air Force Base late this morning, following a week’s stay at his Maine vacation home.

Duarte, 62, remains in guarded but stable condition as his doctors review test results to determine how best to treat his cancer, the hospital said in a statement today. Duarte entered Walter Reed Tuesday night.
