The New Zealand challengers for the America’s Cup have submitted a proposal to a New York judge that would postpone the planned September yacht races until next spring and open the competition to other nations.

Michael Fay’s New Zealand Challenge, which is in court to overturn the San Diego Yacht Club’s plan to race a catamaran against their 90-foot waterline sloop, has proposed the controversial U.S.-New Zealand match be rescheduled to May 1, 1989, with challenger trials starting in March should other nations choose to enter.
