Area Roundup : Seal Beach to Play Host to Volleyball

Sijin Smith and Randy Stoklos, the top-ranked beach volleyball duo in the world, head a 32-team field for the $100,000 Miller Lite Seal Beach Open Saturday and Sunday at Seal Beach.

The double-elimination tournament begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. The championship final is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.

The competition will also include teams Jon Stevenson and Pat Powers, a member of the 1984 United States’ Olympic team; Tim Hovland and Mike Dodd, and Dan Vrebalovich and John Hanley.

The tournament is sanctioned by the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals.

The U.S. Olympic water polo team will play host to a clinic for high school players at Tustin High School on Saturday from 3-5 p.m.

A $10-per-player fee will be charged. Registration and check-in is at 2 p.m. There will also be a $2 charge for spectators.

The 1984 U.S. women’s Olympic volleyball team will unite for the fist time since winning the silver medal to play in a memorial match to honor Flo Hyman, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Bren Center at UC Irvine.

Hyman, a member of the ’84 Olympic team, died of a ruptured aorta at age 31 while playing in a game at Japan in 1986.

The Olympic team will be playing a group of all-stars from Major League Volleyball and collegiate All-Americans.

Rita Crockett, who led the Los Angeles Starlites to the Major League Volleyball title the last two seasons, will lead the Olympic team. Debbie Green, Laurie Flachmier, Rose Magers and Jeanne Beauprey are also expected to play for the Olympic team.

Tara Cross, an All-American from Cal State Long Beach, will play for the all-star team. Cross played at Southern California Christian High School before going to Cal State Long Beach. Ruth Lawanson, the most valuable player of Major League Volleyball, will also play for the all-stars.

Tickets are from $7 to $11 and will be available at the door.

The Mike Tyson/Michael Spinks heavyweight title fight on June 26 in Atlantic City, N.J., will be televised live on a large screen at the Irvine Marriott. The entire fight card, which starts at 6 p.m., will be shown in the grand ballroom at the Irvine Marriott.

Tickets are $35 and go on sale today at the hotel’s gift shop.

More than 200 track and field athletes, 30 years and older, will compete Saturday in the Southern California Striders Masters Meet of Champions at UC Irvine.

The men’s and women’s meet, open to sub-masters (age 30-39) and masters (40 and up), is a preparation meet for the national masters championships, Aug. 6-7 at Orlando, Fla.

Top entrants expected to compete include shotput and discus thrower Dan Aldridge, former chancellor of UC Irvine; javelin specialist Larry Stuart of El Toro, and the Corona del Mar Track Club’s Ken Dennis, winner of the 100-meter dash at the masters world games last December at Melbourne, Australia.

The meet will start with the 5,000-meter run at 10 a.m.

Registration is under way for the fourth Father’s Day slow-pitch softball tournament, which will be played at Magnolia High School June 11.

The tournament is open to men’s C and D teams, with each guaranteed to play at least three games. The entry fee is $150 per team.

Placentia’s Hot Stuff 15-and-under softball team, led by pitchers Sara Roberts and Beth Queypo, won the Memorial Day Invitational softball tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz., outscoring opponents, 54-5, in six games. The 13-girl team won the championship game, 3-2, over the Scottsdale Caseyetts.
