The military Friday acquitted the lone army officer arrested for the 1987 bombing of the Philippine Military Academy that President Corazon Aquino called an attempt on her life.

The court-martial case against Maj. Wilhelm Doromal, a bomb expert who had been teaching at the academy, was dismissed for lack of evidence after 14 months of investigation, Gen. Jesus Dacalan said.

Dacalan did not elaborate on the court’s decision.

Two soldiers and two civilians were killed when a bomb exploded, allegedly prematurely, in March, 1987, at the grandstand of the elite military academy. It went off four days before Aquino was to appear for a graduation ceremony.

Doromal was arrested shortly afterwards in his quarters, where firearms and explosives were found. He has repeatedly denied involvement in the bombing.
