Record high temperatures above the century mark baked the northern plains and western mountains, while a strong high-pressure system centered over northern Illinois pushed the mercury downward throughout much of the eastern United States. Sixteen record highs were set in Arizona, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, North Dakota and Montana--including readings of 108 in Tucson; 102 in Havre and Glasgow, Mont.; and 100 in Billings, Mont. The National Weather Service predicted a repeat of the record heat today. Southern Florida received the day’s heaviest rain, where nearly 2 inches soaked Miami Beach. Atlantic City, N.J., had a record cold 47 degrees, breaking the 1929 record of 49 degrees. Mansfield, Ohio, had a low of 41.
