University of Illinois officials said that they are investigating allegations that maintenance workers did personal work for Athletic Director Neale Stoner and others in his department.

The allegations in a recent newspaper series led Vance Redfern, assistant athletic director, to issue this statement: “This is not a defense, it is a confession. I am coming forward to admit that many of the things that have been alleged in a recent series of articles are true. I have done some things that now seem to me to have been wrong . . . I now have been told by an attorney and a CPA that some of the ‘perks’ of the job I have tried to hold honorably amount to improprieties. More than that, there is a strong possibility that there have been violations of the law.”

Chuck Fisher, a maintainance worker who was laid off last month after 12 years on the staff, said some of the personal work for Stoner included cleaning Stoner’s swimming pool and helping move Stoner from Urbana to his present home in Champaign.

A member of the Illinois General Assembly said he would ask the Legislative Audit Commission to look into the charges.
