Coach Bob Weiss was fired by the San Antonio Spurs Tuesday, the team’s new owner saying a change in direction was needed after two consecutive losing seasons.

“My decision is a subjective one, but it was mine to make, and I just felt it was best for this operation at this time,” B. J. (Red) McCombs said during a news conference.

McCombs, who bought a controlling interest in the National Basketball Assn. team last month, gave no other reason for the decision, which he said he relayed to Weiss by telephone.

Weiss had been given a three-year contract extension in December. McCombs said he did not know the value of Weiss’ contract and that Weiss might be reassigned to another role with the team.

Weiss, a former assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, had a 59-105 record in his two seasons with San Antonio. The Spurs were 31-51 under Weiss this season.

Weiss said: “It’s Red’s team now and he has to have somebody he’s comfortable with. I can certainly see his viewpoint. There is no bitter disappointment.”
