Wayne Duke, commissioner of the Big Ten Conference for 17 years, announced plans to retire at the end of 1989.
Duke will continue as commissioner until the conference’s board of directors appoints his successor, the Big Ten said in a statement from Schaumburg, Ill. After his retirement on Dec. 31, 1989, he will serve as consultant to the Big Ten and other organizations.
