President Pieter W. Botha, citing the “revolutionary climate” in South Africa, today renewed the 2-year-old national state of emergency for 12 months.

Botha said the government needed extension of the state of emergency declared June 12, 1986, to quell escalating violence linked to the government’s apartheid policies of racial discrimination “to control the safety of the public and maintain public order.” He said the renewal is effective for 12 months unless “conditions change.”
