Kialoa V Heads Entries for Race Week

Share

Jim Kilroy’s Kialoa V heads the entry list of about 50 boats for the Long Beach Yacht Club’s ninth annual Race Week, starting today and continuing through Sunday.

Kialoa tops the small maxi class, which also includes Jacques Dewailly’s Emeraude, Harold Day’s Winterhawk and Larry Spira’s Lion New Zealand (with two-time Congressional Cup winner Dick Deaver at the helm).

Dennis Conner, who sometimes steers Kilroy’s boat, was unavailable this week, but Conner’s America’s Cup tactician, Tom Whidden, will be aboard.

A class for ultra-light displacement (ULDB) craft failed to materialize because Pat Farrah, owner-skipper of recent Cal Cup winner Blondie, was away on business and there were insufficient entries. There will be four International Offshore Rule (IOR) classes, along with a one-design class for Schock 35s and J-35s. Racing is scheduled to start daily at noon over courses ranging from 8.2 to 21.2 miles.
