Local News in Brief : Board to Discuss Study of Ban on Night Flights

Share

The Los Angeles Board of Airports Commission will discuss at its next meeting whether to ask for a feasibility study of a nighttime flight curfew at Van Nuys Airport, commissioner Robert Chick said Thursday.

The five-member board may decide at its June 20 meeting to ask the city Department of Airports to investigate a ban on flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., Chick said.

Such a study would assess the noise impact on the community, the impact of a curfew on airport tenants and potential problems the city might face from curtailing nighttime flights.

At the commission’s Wednesday night meeting, homeowners complained of airport noise during what was the first public hearing on the issue since February, when Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs asked the city attorney’s office and Department of Airports to investigate the legality of imposing a curfew.

“It makes me angry that I have to put up with this,” said Carl Davison, who lives two blocks from the airport and said he is awakened by planes each night.

Van Nuys Airport Manager Chuck Zeman said an average of 10 planes, including two jets, depart from the airport between 11 p.m and 7 a.m. nightly.
