Cosmonaut Alexander Alexandrov became the first Bulgarian to board the Soviet space station Mir when he and two Soviet cosmonauts docked their Soyuz capsule with the orbiting craft. The docking was shown live on state-run Soviet and Bulgarian television. Later, Soviet television broke into its evening news program for a live color broadcast showing Alexandrov, a 36-year-old engineer from the town of Omurtag, aboard the station with four Soviet cosmonauts. Alexandrov and his two Soviet crew members, Anatoly Y. Solovyov and Victor P. Savinykh, are scheduled to return to Earth on June 17.
