Secretary of State George P. Shultz today called Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis’ support for moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem “shocking,” saying it would ruin Middle East peace efforts.

“It would be a gigantic mistake, and it’s shocking that anyone would make such a proposal,” Shultz said on NBC’s “Today” program. He said it would be a mistake because Jerusalem is part of Israeli-occupied territory and its final status must be negotiated between Israel and Arab nations. Dukakis was quoted in The Times May 26 as saying the United States should move its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in view of Israel’s claim that Jerusalem is its capital.
