Stars & Stripes sailed its two catamarans together for the first time Thursday, ignoring the uncertainty of whether litigation currently before the New York Supreme Court will allow either craft to defend the America’s Cup against New Zealand’s monohull in September.

“It was pretty exciting,” design chief John Marshall said after the dissimilar boats--one has a fixed-shape, wing-type sail, the other a conventional soft rig--had sailed around the bay.

Marshall said it would take six to eight weeks to determine the better boat.
