Britain and Iran reached an agreement Friday settling mutual compensation claims for damage to their embassies, a British Foreign Office spokesman said.

Under the proposal, Britain will pay Iran $3.2 million and Iran will give Britain $1.6 million, the spokesman added.

Britain’s embassy in Tehran was damaged by rioting in 1978 and 1979. Iran’s mission in London was ravaged by fire in 1980 when British commandos stormed it to free diplomats held hostage by opponents of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

The Foreign Office said in a statement on the compensation claims: “Some technical points remain to be settled, and we and the Iranians have agreed that we both need more time to consider these further.” An Iranian official said the only point of disagreement was on how the money would be paid.
