Tennessee Sen. Albert Gore Jr. is ready to endorse Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis for the Democratic presidential nomination, the Tennessean newspaper reported Friday.

Details are still being worked out, but Dukakis could receive the endorsement next week during a campaign swing through the South, the Nashville paper said, quoting an aide to the senator.

“I think it’s clear that’s what our next step is going to be, but the senator has not said officially he’s going to endorse Dukakis,” Gore spokesman Mike Kopp said.

Gore suspended his presidential campaign on April 21 after a third-place finish in the New York primary two days earlier. He won six states in the March 8 Super Tuesday sweepstakes but was shut out in subsequent contests.

Dukakis spokesman Mark Gearan said the governor’s campaign swing next week could include a stop in Tennessee.

“We definitely want to come there,” Gearan said, “if not next week, then later.”
