Local News in Brief : Funds Sought to Build Sea Wall
The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council, sitting as the Redevelopment Agency, is seeking funds to construct a sea wall to help stabilize the Portuguese Bend landslide.
“We figure it will cost $20 million” to build a retaining wall to protect the shoreline, agency Chairwoman Jacki Bacharach said.
The most likely sources of funds for the sea wall are the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. Expansion at both ports has destroyed marine environments, and under federal and state law the ports must offset this damage by helping to revitalize similar marine habitats.
The Redevelopment Agency believes the city could qualify for port funding because the Portuguese Bend slide is depositing thousands of tons of silt into offshore tidal areas, making them unfit for marine life.
The agency on Tuesday hired B. Szabo Inc., a consulting firm, to help obtain funding for the project. The company will be paid $2,000 a month.
