Thunderstorms produced violent weather but also brought much needed rain over the drought-stricken northern plains, while record cold temperatures chilled the Southeast. Storms developed along a cold front and extended from eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota across central South Dakota. Wind gusts to 62 m.p.h. were reported at Jamestown, N. D., and gusts to 60 m.p.h. at Mobridge, S. D. High winds downed a tree and damaged a roof at Tappen, N. D., officials said. The record cold temperatures included Asheville, N. C., 40; Bristol, Tenn., 45; Knoxville, Tenn., 47, and Pinson, Ala., 48.
