Israeli troops shot and killed a deaf Palestinian man Monday who apparently failed to heed shouts of warning by the soldiers in a West Bank village, hospital officials and Palestinian sources said.

An Israeli army spokesman confirmed that soldiers entered the area in pursuit of Arab suspects but had no information on the death.

Palestinians demonstrating against Israel’s continued occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip clashed with Israeli soldiers in at least 12 other towns and refugee camps in the West Bank, but no serious injuries were reported.

The shooting incident took place outside the West Bank village of Abwein, about 28 miles north of Jerusalem.

Residents told officials of Ramallah Hospital that Deeb Mahmub Mohammed Hussein, 43, was working in a field when soldiers who entered the village to make arrests began firing.

Hussein, who was deaf, began running and did not hear warning shouts by the soldiers, villagers said.

It was not known immediately if Hussein was one of the suspects being chased.
