A man who was shot by a deputy marshal in March after wielding a knife outside the Family Court Services Building on 6th Avenue downtown pleaded no contest Wednesday to interfering with an officer.

Royal Broten, 39, entered his plea before San Diego Superior Court Judge Bernard Revak just as jury selection in his trial was to begin. A charge of assault with a deadly weapon will be dismissed at his sentencing July 8. Broten could be sentenced to a maximum of three years and fined $10,000.

On March 18, Broten became the first person shot by a marshal in the service’s 50-year history when Deputy Marshal James McCain as Broten was brandishing his knife and yelling. He did not respond to an order to drop the knife.
