On June 7, 83% of the voters expressed the opinion that the life of a peace officer is more valuable than that of a civilian. Proposition 67 now calls for longer prison terms for killers of on-duty police officers than for killers of anyone else. The proposition is intended to increase the security of police officers, but because of the unplanned and spontaneous nature of the crime that it covers, second-degree murder, it will be of no use. Any toughening of prison sentences should apply to murderers of all people. It seems that the 99.6% of us who are not cops could also use additional judicial aid.
