Local News in Brief : Seniors’ Bus Subsidy Increased
Notified that the Southern California Rapid Transit District has increased the fee for its monthly senior citizen passes to $10 from $7, the Hawthorne City Council has decided to increase the city’s subsidy for Hawthorne seniors to $5 from $3. Thus, seniors will pay $5 for monthly passes purchased at the city treasurer’s office.
Funds for the subsidy will be drawn from the city’s share of Los Angeles County’s transit tax, Proposition A, approved by voters in 1980. The measure allocates half a cent of the 6 1/2-cent sales tax to provide reduced bus fares, improved public transit and a regional rail system.
