Local News in Brief : Oxy Drain System Truce

Share

As a result of a rare truce between Occidental Petroleum Corp. and opponents of the firm’s plans to drill for oil beneath the Pacific Palisades, Occidental will soon begin installation of a $2.5-million drainage system at the site.

Under the Superior Court agreement signed by Judge Eric Younger, No Oil Inc., a group opposed to the drilling, agreed to halt its effort to stop installation of the drainage system, which is intended to stabilize slide-prone bluffs near the site. Occidental, in turn, agreed not to make any claim for reimbursement for the system’s costs to the City of Los Angeles, No Oil or the residents’ association in the event that drilling plans are blocked.

The drilling controversy is expected to be resolved by rival initiatives on the November ballot. One initiative, sponsored by Los Angeles City Councilmen Marvin Braude and Zev Yaroslavsky would prohibit on-shore drilling along the city’s coast. The other, backed by Occidental and its supporters, would allow such drilling.
