Cobras’ Stowers to Undergo Surgery
Dester Stowers, a rookie defensive lineman for the Los Angeles Cobras and a former standout at Cal State Northridge, will undergo ankle surgery today and miss the remainder of the Arena Football League season.
Stowers, who is considered among the league’s top defensive lineman, will have a pin placed in his right ankle. He will be able to resuming running in two months, according to Cobra spokesman Bruce Dworshak.
Stowers, 22, was injured while pass blocking in the fourth quarter of Friday’s 39-26 loss to the Detroit Drive. All players except quarterbacks and kickers are required to play offense and defense under Arena football’s substitution rules.
Stowers is the third Matador-turned-Cobra to have his season curtailed by injury. Defensive specialist Lou Green was placed on the injured reserve list and then waived after suffering a hyper-extended right knee. Lineman Tony Palamara is on the injured reserve list because of a rib injury.
A fourth former Matador, offensive-defensive lineman Brian Clark, has escaped the injury jinx and remains on the 18-player active roster.
