Marcos on the Philippines
It was a surprise and an irony to find Marcos’ well-reasoned article among the pages of The Times. It is interesting to read his informed opinion about exactly what is happening in the country he once kept so closely allied to the United States.
Essentially, the weak left-leaning government of Aquino is taking a hostile attitude toward America, with some of its foremost politicians loudly calling the historic relationship between our countries “oppressive” and “imperialistic.” At the same time they are warming up to Russia, coddling the domestic communist revolutionaries, and agitating for the closure of the American bases most important to the security of both our nations.
The interference in the Philippine elections which overthrew Marcos will yet prove to be greatest foreign relations disaster of this Administration, though you don’t have to look beyond the liberal press and Congress to see who pushed President Reagan into it.
