Special Olympics Summer Games Slated

The California Special Olympics will hold its 19th annual statewide Summer Games today through Sunday at UCLA and Little Tokyo Bowl.

In the tradition of the Olympic Games, the CSO Summer Games will begin at 6 p.m. today with opening ceremonies and the lighting of a torch at UCLA’s Drake Stadium. Closing ceremonies will begin Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Drake Stadium.

More than 2,500 children and adults with mental retardation will compete in 10 sports, including aquatics, basketball, bowling, gymnastics, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and weight-lifting.

Celebrity participants include Catherine Bach, Cathy Lee Crosby, Sheree Wilson, Michael Nouri, Susan Blakley, Julianne McNamara, Richard Dean Anderson, Todd Christensen, Jonathan Prince, Gil Gerard and Terry Schroeder.
