Jackson, Dukakis and the Democrats
I read with dismay the following quote from President Reagan: “. . . If I listened to him (Dukakis) long enough, I would be convinced that we’re in an economic downturn and that people are homeless and people are going without food and medical attention, and that we’ve got to do something” (Part I, June 9).
Could our President really be so far removed from reality that he thinks these problems exist only in the minds of Democrats? Could he be so insulated that he doesn’t know that there are, in fact, signs of an economic downturn (bank failures, housing foreclosures, etc., and all at record paces)? Doesn’t he understand that there really are homeless people, and people who go without food and medical attention? Could he truly be unaware of the plight of some Americans?
I find the President’s apparent ignorance and, worse still, his apparent apathy terrifying.
You said, Mr. President, that you would be convinced of these things if you listened to Dukakis long enough. Perhaps you ought to start listening.
