Haywood Wins the Trans-Am Event After Pruett Muscles Ribbs Off Course

Veteran Hurley Haywood drove an Audi Quattro to victory Saturday in the Trans-Am preliminary to today’s Detroit Grand Prix but not without a lot of help from runner-up Scott Pruett.

Willy T. Ribbs was leading as the field headed into the final lap of the Motor City 100 when his Camaro was muscled off the course by Pruett’s Merkur in Turn 11 of the 20-turn circuit. Pruett, who won the International Race of Champions a week ago at Riverside International Raceway, managed to keep his mangled car going and finished second.

“It was stupid on his part,” Ribbs said later. “We were both sliding when we went into the short chute. You don’t try to pass there. He basically took me out. He’s got one coming.”
