Spanish tenor Jose Carreras announced Monday in his hometown of Barcelona that he would perform in public next month for the first time since he fell ill with leukemia last July. The 40-year-old Carreras, who underwent a bone marrow transplant in Seattle last November, said he would perform once a month for the next six months until he was fully recovered. The open-air concert on July 21 in Barcelona will be free, except for one row of seats at $2,250 each. Receipts and donations from the public will be spent on equipment to treat leukemia patients at a Barcelona hospital, he said.
