Local News in Brief : Fund Raiser Charged
A former fund raiser for the defunct Universal Rescue Mission was charged Monday with continuing to solicit and pocket donations months after the downtown Los Angeles mission went out of business.
Arthur Rainey, 27, of South-Central Los Angeles was charged with seven counts of attempted petty theft for allegedly trying to cash donation checks of $5 to $20 that he had solicited from people who thought they were contributing to the mission, which closed in April.
Rainey could be sentenced to three months in County Jail and fined $500 for each count if convicted.
