Dissident Writers Open Proxy Drive
A dissident Writers Guild of America group has launched a proxy drive to accept the producers’ latest contract offer, despite union leaders’ opposition.
About 300 writers, most of them high-earning TV and film writers, attended the Writers Coalition’s invitation-only meeting Monday night in Santa Monica.
The 9,000-member guild, whose strike is in its 16th week, will vote Wednesday. A proxy vote would allow coalition supporters to vote for the contract proposal on behalf of writers who do not attend Wednesday’s vote meeting.
Brian Walton, chief guild negotiator, was refused permission to attend Monday’s meeting. In a letter read at the meeting, he said, “I believe deeply in your right of freedom of association and assembly and the right of guild members freely to express themselves.”
But he also urged rejection of the offer.
