Governor Vetoes Helmet Bill

Share

Assemblyman Richard Floyd’s (D-Hawthorne) statement that Gov. George Deukmejian “ . . . Caved in to the pressure of the outlaw motorcyclists” when he vetoed the mandatory helmet bill is totally false (Part I, June 14). The governor listened to the voice of the people, myself included, and arrived at the correct decision. The answer to the issue of motorcycle safety is education of riders and other motorists, not mandatory helmets.

Also, while I have nothing personal against outlaw motorcyclists, I resent Floyd’s implication that the citizens who disagree with his narrow point of view are outlaws. I am certain many professional people who ride motorcycles and share my view of freedom of choice also share my resentment.
