The Nuclear Regulatory Commission today recommended the Air Force be fined $102,500 for a 1986 spill of highly radioactive americium-241.

It was the first time the NRC had ever proposed imposing a fine on a military agency, a commission spokesman said. The Air Force has 30 days to either pay the fine or file a protest.
