West Hollywood : Church, City Resolve Conflict
A two-year dispute between a group of neighbors and a West Hollywood church came to a close Monday night after the West Hollywood City Council approved a use permit for the church’s property.
The council approved a settlement between the city’s legal counsel and neighbors of the Crescent Heights United Methodist Church, limiting the number of people who can attend functions of church property. Neighbors had sued the city for giving the church a permit because they said the meetings of community organizations at the church created parking problems in the surrounding area, according to the church’s pastor, the Rev. Miriam Stump.
The modified-use permit became acceptable the the church when the City Council agreed June 6 to allow up to 200 people to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings there every Saturday afternoon, Stump said. At other times, the communitys organizations can be host to no more than 100 people in the church.
The permit also requires the church to give the city a list of all groups using either office or meeting space there.
