High School Graduate Honored for U.N. Essay

Jamesina Tapper, a recent graduate of Huntington Beach High School, was honored at the 1988 United Nations Inaugural Ball in New York City.

Tapper and two other students were recognized at a special reception before the ball for their essays on “The Role of the United States in the United Nations.”

Tapper, who received $750 for her second-place finish in the national essay contest, will be entering the biological sciences program in the fall at UC Irvine.

Also present at the reception was Lynn Aase, Model United Nations adviser at Huntington Beach High School.

Martin Brinkerhoff of Irvine won a first-place award at the U.S. Film and Video Festival in Chicago for his 70-minute presentation that introduced Mazda’s new line of automobiles to dealers. He is president and creative director of Martin Brinkerhoff Associates Inc., which specializes in product marketing.

Attorney Patricia Andel Discoe, 29, of Orange has bested 50 others to become the statewide Business and Professional Women’s “Young Careerist” and will advance to national competition this summer in New Mexico.

Discoe, a trial associate in a county law firm, spoke on “The Future: Challenges, Choices and Change” to win the title. She is a member of the South Coast Business and Professional Women.

Ken Lyall, director of corporate communications for AVCO Financial Services in Irvine, has been named Communicator of the Year by the county chapter of the International Assn. of Business Communicators, the highest achievement given a member.

Mark Dillon, 13, of Fountain Valley was named an Eagle Scout. His Eagle project included building distance markers and painting equipment at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Five county high school juniors have been named recipients of the Smith College Book Award given for academic excellence, leadership and concern for others. The winners are Marcella Anderson, Laguna Beach High; Michelle Harms, Trabuco Hills High; Nancy Kedzierski, Laguna Hills High; Casey Kile, Mission Viejo High, and Diane Wakeham, El Toro High.

Each year the college in Northampton, Mass., asks county high schools to nominate juniors who embody those qualities and set examples of scholarship and concern for contributing to society.

The awards were presented by Lucinda Prewitt, Smith alumna and member for the Smith College Club of Orange County. This year, 29 students from Orange County attended Smith.

Antoine Randolph, 27, of Fullerton was named the recipient of Fullerton College’s humanities division’s major academic award, the $1,000 English Scholarship. He plans to attend UC Santa Cruz.

Raymond King, a senior at Capistrano Valley High School, won first place and $200 in Capistrano by the Sea Hospital’s fifth Annual Poster Art Contest. This year’s theme was “Mental Health is a Balanced Life.”

Yorba Linda resident Gary Gallogly won on the second playoff hole against Bruce Samaklis of Ontario to win the Los Angeles Golf Championship at Rancho Park Golf Course, where he had never played before.

Gallogly, a marketing major at Cal State Fullerton and member of the college golf squad, plays out of the Yorba Linda Country Club. He said he plans to turn professional soon.

“It feels good to win,” said Gallogly, who had his mother and father following him as his rooting section.

Four years ago, Gallogly was struck in his automobile by a hit-and-run driver and left for dead. He recovered and returned to golfing six months later.

Third-grade students Dawnelle Peck, Jennifer Nguyen and Angela Wedel won first, second and third place, respectively, in an art poster contest dealing with home ownership and homelessness. It was conducted by the Huntington Beach-Fountain Valley Board of Realtors.

The three are students of teacher Carlene Mooneyham at Gisler Elementary School. The contest was open to kindergarten-through-eighth-grade students in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley.
