A Canadian judge has denied bail to accused U.S. mass murderer Charles Ng, ordering him to remain in custody in Edmonton, until a hearing in October on California’s extradition request. Justice Marguerite Trussler denied bail to Ng, 27, a drifter and former Marine wanted in California to stand trial on 12 counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy to murder and six counts of kidnaping. Ng’s lawyers are expected to oppose the extradition because he faces charges that could involve the death penalty. Under the U.S.-Canada extradition agreement, the Canadian government has the right to refuse to extradite a fugitive who faces the death penalty. Ng became the focus of an international manhunt in June, 1985, when his companion, Leonard Lake, committed suicide. Authorities later uncovered at least 11 bodies, 45 pounds of charred bones, weapons, bloody tools and videotapes of sexual torture in Lake’s mountain cabin.
