Rowing Club Wins Event at National Meet

The San Diego Rowing Club won the 2,000-meter junior men’s quad sculls event Saturday at the U.S. National Rowing Championships at Indianapolis.

The team of Lars Caroe, Jimmy Warmington, Mark Skirgaudas and Bret Casady won in 6:50.80. The Mexican national team was second in 7:08.7, and the Detroit Boat Club was third in 7:09.9.

GOLF

An additional $400,000 has been added to the prize money for the 1989 MONY Tournaments of Champions, which raises the total purse to $1 million, tournament director Mike Crosthwaite announced this week.

The Tournament of Champions purse has been increased $250,000 to $750,000, and the purse for the Senior Tournament of Champions has been raised $150,000 to $250,000.

The tournaments, Jan. 5-8 at La Costa, officially open the 1989 PGA Tour season.

VOLLEYBALL

The San Diego Volleyball Club, a girls’ junior team, defeated Italy, 15-0, 15-3, 15-1, to finish fifth at the International Volleyball Challenge at South Bend, Ind., Saturday.

South Korea defeated the California Juniors, 15-6, 15-3, 15-2, to win the tournament.

BASKETBALL

Zach Jones scored 21 points, including 17 in the second half, to lead the Crown to an 88-86 victory over Courageous Endurance in a Supreme Court Pro-Am League men’s basketball game at Coronado High School Saturday.

Jones, who played at San Diego State, led the Crown to the league title last year. Mitch McMullen, a senior at SDSU, scored 26 points to lead Courageous Endurance.

In other games, Unpretentious defeated Good Judgment, 84-73, behind 22 points from Chris Crawford and 21 from Kerry McIntyre, who played at Grossmont High School.

In the women’s league, Chana Perry scored 25 points, but it wasn’t enough as Awesome Image defeated Blind Faith, 65-56.

The women play today at noon, followed by men’s games at 1:15 and 2:45 at Coronado.

TENNIS

Cynthia MacGregor, who played tennis at San Diego State, won her first-round match in the Ladies Plate division at Wimbledon Saturday.

MacGregor defeated Pat Medrado of Brazil, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. Monique Javer, who also played at SDSU, lost in the first round to Laura Lapi of Italy, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Bob Rump of Grossmont College has been named coach of the year for community college women’s tennis by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. Rump led the Grossmont women’s tennis team to the state title last season, his first coaching the women’s team.
