Marco van Basten scored nine minutes into the second half Saturday to secure the Netherlands’ 2-0 soccer victory over the Soviet Union in the European Championship final at Munich, West Germany.

Ruud Gullit scored the first Dutch goal in the 33rd minute as the Netherlands won its first European Championship before a capacity crowd of 72,308 at the Olympic Stadium. The Dutch lost, 1-0, to the Soviets in their opening-group match at Cologne, West Germany, on June 12.

The Netherlands became the first national team to win the European Championship in the same year that its national champion won the European Cup. PSV Eindhoven took that trophy in May, and four PSV players were in the lineup Saturday.
