Syrian-allied Palestinian dissidents overran Beirut’s Chatilla refugee camp in a 13-hour battle, and about 140 of Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat’s fighters surrendered to Syrian peacekeeping troops, Beirut police said. Sixty other Arafat loyalists laid down their weapons and asked to be taken to Arafat’s bases in southern Lebanon, police said. The fall of the camp was a serious setback for Arafat’s mainstream Fatah faction, which has been fighting Abu Moussa’s radical Fatah Uprising faction since May 1 for control of the Chatilla and nearby Borj el Brajne camps.
