About 40,000 Hungarians--with tacit official approval--demonstrated in Budapest against Romanian plans to raze 7,000 villages in the biggest independent rally since the 1956 Hungarian revolution. Among the villages to be destroyed under a resettlement program ordered by Romania are ancient Hungarian and Saxon settlements in Transylvania, an area bordering Hungary in which about 2 million ethnic Hungarians live.
