Local News in Brief : Port Official Leaves
At a time when the Port of Los Angeles is embarking on a new effort to cooperate with neighboring communities, its director of government and community relations has left his job--abruptly and without explanation--just 10 months after he was hired.
Harbor Department officials on Monday declined to say whether Cal E. Burton resigned or was fired from the $54,700-a-year position. Spokeswoman Julia Nagano said only that Burton, whose last day was Friday, “is no longer employed here.”
Burton could not be reached.
Burton’s position has become increasingly important as the Harbor Department tries to deal with criticism from residents of nearby San Pedro and Wilmington about traffic and pollution from the port.
Burton and his staff won approval this year for a new community relations program for the port, including a coordinator to deal specifically with residents’ concerns as the port grows. The program will not be affected by his departure, Nagano said.
