Phillies Rally in Seventh to End Cubs’ Win Streak

Juan Samuel, Bob Dernier and Von Hayes delivered consecutive run-scoring singles with the bases loaded in the seventh inning Wednesday to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory over Chicago, snapping the Cubs’ four-game winning streak.

Mike Maddux, 2-0, scattered seven hits over six innings for the victory. He struck out five and walked three, one intentionally. Steve Bedrosian got two outs for his 13th save.

Trailing 2-0, the Phillies rallied for three runs in the seventh off Calvin Schiraldi, 4-6, who had allowed just three hits through six innings. Schiraldi struck out a career-high 11 batters.

Schiraldi loaded the bases with one out on singles by Darren Daulton and Steve Jeltz and a walk to Mike Young. Samuel greeted reliever Les Lancaster with a single to score Daulton. Pat Perry relieved and pinch hitter Dernier hit another single to tie the score. Hayes then singled home Young to make it 3-2.

Al Nipper got Mike Schmidt to strike out and Chris James to ground out with the bases still loaded to end the inning.

The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run single by Andre Dawson. Dave Martinez led off with a single, Schiraldi reached when Maddux booted his sacrifice bunt for an error and Rafael Palmeiro was hit by a pitch before Dawson singled.

The Phillies made it 4-2 in the eighth when Young’s RBI double scored Jeltz, who reached on a fielding error by Nipper.
