*** AL B. SURE! “In Effect Mode.” Warner Bros. Sure!, a 19-year-old New Yorker with a dreamy, falsetto style reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Philip Bailey, has produced a debut album that is long on artful, mattress-bouncing bravado. That particularly applies to the crossover hit single, “Nite and Day,” a ballad tailor-made to create a Sensual Man in the ‘80s mode. Sure!--who added the exclamation point to his stage name as a marketing gimmick--has included several love songs on the album, including a remake of Roberta Flack’s 1973 “Killing Me Softly,” but his up-tempo material is more effective. Sure! seems to think he sounds ultra-seductive when he croons wistfully on ballads such as “Oooh This Love Is So,” but his brusque pursuit of an independent woman in “Off on Your Own (Girl)” and “If I’m Not Your Lover” delivers the goods with more finesse.
