Share

A Los Angeles police officer accidentally shot a downtown transient in the cheek Monday when the man leaned against the officer’s patrol car and looked inside, officials said.

Officers Christopher C. Warren, 27, and Roy Wagner, 42, were driving north in an alley between Broadway and Spring streets about 11:30 a.m. when they spotted three transients. The transients split up and the officers followed one of them, Ronald P. Jones, 25, into a parking lot at 401 S. Spring St.

Detective Sid Nuckles said the officers repeatedly asked Jones to stop, but he kept coming toward their car, finally leaning against it to look inside. Warren, sitting in the passenger seat, tried to lean away from Jones, and in so doing accidentally fired his police revolver, which he had drawn.

The bullet struck Jones in the left cheek, Nuckles said. He was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he was listed in satisfactory condition.
