An order that UC campuses curtail “discretionary spending” has forced UC Irvine to cancel a series of summer concerts and could threaten other cultural events sponsored by the state university system. UC Irvine dropped a four-week series featuring local jazz, pop and chamber musicians after UC President David P. Gardner ordered all nine UC campuses to tighten their belts. A UC Irvine spokeswoman, Kathy Jones, said several programs that had been scheduled to start Thursday are the system’s first casualties as a result of the state’s fiscal problems. But, Jones warned: “This is not a solitary thing. I think you’ll be seeing a lot more of this in the next few months.”
