Chargers, Wide Receiver Early Agree to 4-Year Deal

Wide receiver Quinn Early, a third-round draft choice from the University of Iowa, has agreed to a four-year contract with the Chargers, the player’s agent said Thursday.

“We’ve agreed to terms, said Marshall Rosenthal, Early’s Long Island, N.Y.-based agent. The contract is reportedly worth $850,000 including bonuses.

Rosenthal declined to comment on the terms of the contract.

Nine of the Chargers 10 draft picks are still unsigned. Rookies are expected to report to training camp on Wednesday.

The Seattle Seahawks announced the signing of two former San Diego State players, including veteran free agent Vernon Dean, a starter at cornerback for most of his six years with the Washington Redskins. The Seahawks also signed former SDSU offensive tackle Dave DesRochers, a 12th-round choice this year.

Vista High School’s Marc Jones, a football recruit at the University of Colorado, has been denied admittance to the school after he pleaded guilty to a felony mayhem charge, CU Athletic Director Bill Marolt said.

Jones, 18, a 6-foot 1-inch, 180-pound running back, rushed for 1,003 yards and was the most valuable player in the Palomar League his senior year. He also won all-state honors.

VOLLEYBALL

The San Diego Volleyball Club, competing in the United States Volleyball Assn.’s Junior Olympics in Ft. Collins, Colo., won three double-elimination matches.

The No. 1-seeded girls’ 18-and-under team from San Diego swept two opponents. It dropped the first game of a match against the tournament’s No. 2 seed and defending champion, Sports Performance of Chicago, before winning, 7-15, 15-8, 15-4.

In today’s winners bracket semifinals, San Diego meets Front Range, a Colorado-based team, and the Orange County Volleyball Club meets the Las Vegas Volleyball Club.

SOCCER

The San Diego Nomads end their regular season in the Western Soccer Alliance tonight at 8 at Southwestern College against the San Jose Earthquakes.

The first-place Nomads are guaranteed a playoff spot with an 8-3 record but must win this game to gain the postseason home-field advantage. The Earthquakes are 7-3 and in second.

Tickets are $4 for adults, $2 for children.

GOLF

Chris Whitehead shot a lifetime best round of 67 in the 15-17 boys’ junior Golf Americard Tournament at the San Vicente Country Club. Chuc-Lan Lantow of Ramona won the girls’ 15-17 division.

Whitehead, of Ramona, beat his personal record by four strokes. Todd Demsey of Rancho Santa Fe was second with a 73. There was a three-way tie, at 73, in the girls’ competition before Lantow broke it in a playoff. Leta Lindley of Carlsbad was second, Tomoko Yamashita of Del Mar third.
