HIGH LIFE : Teen Is in the Write With Essay on U.S. Role in U.N.

Jamesina Tapper, a recent graduate of Huntington Beach High School, was honored at the 1988 United Nations Inaugural Ball in New York City.

Tapper and two other students were recognized at a special reception before the ball for their essays on “The Role of the United States in the United Nations.”

Tapper, who received $750 for her second-place finish in the national essay contest, will be entering the biological sciences program in the fall at UC Irvine.

Also present at the reception was Lynne Aase, Model United Nations adviser at Huntington Beach High School

More than 1,500 runners are expected at the seventh Cypress 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer run at 7:30 a.m. July 23. Proceeds will go to four scholarships for Cypress High School students.

Pre-registration entry deadline is July 15. Forms are available at the Cypress Community Center, 5700 Orange Ave. The pre-registration fee is $7 for the race only and $12 for the race and a T-shirt.

Troy High School is the California winner of this year’s Search for Excellence in Science Education award offered by the Secondary National Science Teachers’ Assn.

The Fullerton high school becomes California’s entry in the competition to choose the nation’s top high school science-training program.

Competing against 57 other dancers from 29 states, Shannon Straight, 15, of Laguna Beach placed second in the Show Stopper West Coast National Dance Competition held recently at Disneyland Hotel. The Laguna Beach High School sophomore performed a tap dance.

For the Record: In addition to other awards listed in last Saturday’s “Hot, Hip & Happening” column, Mater Dei High School’s production of “The Music Man” received the MACY trophy for the “best musical” of Orange County by the Musical and Art Commendation for Youth group at its 18th annual competition. Mater Dei’s production was directed by John Merino.
