BASEBALL MISCELLANY : NAMES AND NUMBERS:

Share

Hot Chili: The Angels’ Chili Davis, with 3 homers in his last 7 games, has 12 this season, matching the total hit by the current outfield of the San Francisco Giants, his 1987 employer. Candy Maldonado has hit 7 for the Giants, Brett Butler 3 and Mike Aldrete 2.

Balloting: There were 1,922,142 All-Star votes cast for 8 members of the Baltimore Orioles, 1,083,424 for 8 members of the Atlanta Braves and only 600,416 for 8 members of the Seattle Mariners. The St. Louis Cardinals’ Ozzie Smith, the National League starter at shortstop, received 2,106,757 votes.

Balloting II: The Orioles Eddie Murray, a seven-time All-Star, finished 11th among American League first basemen, drawing fewer votes than Al Pedrique--who is in the minors.

Wizard’s Woes: Ozzie Smith has made 12 errors, two more than he made all last season. Twice in the last week, he made errors on back-to-back plays.

No Relief: The Cardinals have blown their last six save opportunities and All-Star Todd Worrell was without a save in three chances since June 8. “Let’s face it,” Manager Whitey Herzog said. “If we can’t go to Worrell or Ken Dayley with a three-run lead in the eighth, we might as well pack it up.”

Some Relief: Ex-Dodger Tom Niedenfuer has converted 20 of his last 24 save opportunities with the beleaguered Orioles, no small accomplishment.

Power Failure: The New York Yankees, with all their offense, are 0-26 in games they have trailed after the seventh inning.

Power Drain: The injury-riddled Milwaukee Brewers are using a

lineup that includes only two players with 25 or more runs batted in: Robin Yount, 45, and Dale Sveum, 39. Glenn Braggs and Rob Deer, who each have 42 RBIs, and Greg Brock, who has 32, are on the disabled list. Brock has been sidelined since June 5. His replacements, Joey Meyer and Billy Jo Robidoux, have driven in 2 runs.

MVP: The New York Mets are 18-1 in games in which Darryl Strawberry has homered.

Ace in the Hole: The Cleveland Indians’ Greg Swindell, 10-1 on May 30, is 0-6 in 7 starts since, allowing 30 earned runs in 36 innings.

Price of Success: The Giants’ Will Clark, who drove in 29 runs in 25 games as National League player of the month in June, drew 7 intentional walks in the first 7 games of July. Clark leads the league in walks, 57, and RBIs, 68.

Overtime: The Oakland Athletics have played 13 innings or more 7 times and are 7-0.

Sweet Music: The Minnesota Twins’ Frank Viola, who will start Tuesday’s All-Star game for the American League, is 14-2 this season and 25-6 over a 162-game span between July 4 of last year and July 6 of this year.

Poor Man’s Rotation: Non-pitchers Dan Gladden, Jim Morrison, John Cangelosi, Dave Concepcion and Jose Oquendo have all seen service on the mound this year, allowing only 2 earned runs in 10 innings.

Very Blue Jays: The Toronto outfield of George Bell, Jesse Barfield and Lloyd Moseby averaged an extra-base hit every 9.2 at-bats last season. The 1988 average through Thursday was every 17.9 at-bats.
