Gay & Lesbian Film Festival Continues

The Los Angeles International Gay & Lesbian Film/Video Festival continues at the Directors Guild tonight at 9:30 with “Angels of the Night” by Brazil’s Wilson Barros.

The film, as ambitious as it is effective, creates an intricately structured and layered fantasy of life in Sao Paulo’s fast lanes, much as Fellini did for Rome in “La Dolce Vita.” Barros ranges from backstage theater life to streetwalkers, from high-rise luxury to slums, from sex to crime, as we follow a young bisexual hustler and many others in a dusk-to-dawn odyssey.

Occasionally pretentious but always vital and entertaining, “Angels of the Night” features two of Brazil’s most vivid stars, fiery Zeze Motta, who functions as a kind of queen of the underworld, and Marilia Pera (of “Pixote” and “Mixed Blood”), who plays a gaudy, fun-loving aging movie star.
